International Round Table “Graduates of the Philosophy Faculty of Lviv University,” dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the birth of Stepan Baleі and the 130th anniversary of the birth of Oleksandr Kulchytsky.
On February 7, an International Roundtable «Graduates of the Faculty of
Philosophy of Lviv University» was held, dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the
birth of Stepan Balei and the 130th anniversary of the birth of Oleksandr
Kulchytskyi. The event was held in the Hall of Mirrors of the Ivan Franko National
University of Lviv. Scientists from Ukraine, Poland and Germany volunteered to
participate. The event was organized by the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
Grant support The Teodota and Ivan Klym Grants in Ukrainian Studies 2024–2025
was provided by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of
Alberta. The event was moderated by Andrii Dakhnii, Head of the Department of
History of Philosophy and Andrii Synytsia, Professor at the Department of History of
Philosophy. At the beginning, Andrii Dakhnii spoke about the organizational nuances
of the event and the importance of its holding. The Dean of the Faculty of
Philosophy, Prof. Olena Kvas, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech,
emphasizing the uniqueness of the figures of Stepan Balei and Oleksandr Kulchytskyi
for the development of Ukrainian science and culture. For his part, Andrii Synytsia
thanked the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the opportunity to hold the event and honor
our outstanding graduates, the University of Alberta (Canada) for its assistance and
support of Ukraine, and the employees of the University for ensuring the event. Later,
those present had the opportunity to listen to and discuss the reports of the
participants, in which they highlighted the philosophical, logical, pedagogical and
psychological aspects of the creative work of Stepan Balei and Oleksandr
Kulchytskyi. The event was held in person and remotely.
The first part of the event discussed the scientific contribution of Stepan Balei.
In particular, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences Andrii Dakhnii presented a report
«War as a clash of civilizations: on the relevance of the article by S. Balei “The
Meaning of War”», Docent Mykhailo Podoliak (Lviv National Stepan Gzhytskyi
University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology) made a presentation
«Assessment of Balei’s contribution to the development of psychology», Docent
Oksana Panafidina (Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University) presented a report
«Self-knowledge and the ideal personality: Stepan Balei’s philosophico-ethical
reflections», and Docent Marianna Plakhtii (Kamianets-Podіlskyi Ivan Ohiienko
National University) presented a report «Ukrainian Logical Terminology according to
the textbook of Stepan Balei». This was followed by a discussion of Stepan Balei’s
scientific legacy.
After a short break, the participants of the meeting continued and in the second
part focused on the analysis of the scientific contribution of Oleksandr Kulchytskyi.
In particular, Prof. Anatolii Karas (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv)
delivered a report «Philosophy of Oleksandr Kulchytskyi in the light of today’s
challenges». Subsequently, Andrii Dakhnii briefly presented the main theses of the
report by Dr. Frank Tremmel (independent researcher, Hamburg, Germany)
«Kulchytskyi and his reception of the ideas of German philosophy and psychology».
Prof. Olha Honcharenko (Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National Academy of the State
Border Service of Ukraine) delivered a report «Olexander Kulchytskyi’s Philosophy
of Consciousness». And in conclusion, Prof. Andrii Synytsia presented a report
«Analytic view of Oleksandr Kulchytskyi’s philosophical anthropology». Afterwards,
the participants discussed the creative legacy of Oleksandr Kulchytskyi.
At the end, a final discussion took place, in which the scientifico-philosophical
views of Stepan Balei and Oleksandr Kulchytskyi were considered in the context of
the ideas of European philosophy.
Even though, for objective reasons, it was not possible to discuss in detail the
topics announced by foreign colleagues, the organizers of the event emphasized that
work on the project continues and the texts of the reports, as well as other materials in
general to honor the creative legacy of Stepan Balei and Oleksandr Kulchytskyi, will
be published by the Publishing House of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
Therefore, the organizers of the event thanked everyone for their participation and
called for cooperation.
