Book Exhibition “Graduates of the Philosophy Faculty of Lviv University”

On February 4, the opening of the book exhibition «Alumni of the Faculty of
Philosophy of Lviv University» dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the birth of
Stepan Balei and the 130th anniversary of the birth of Oleksandr Kulchytskyi took
place in the Reading Hall of the Scientific Library of the Ivan Franko National
University of Lviv. The exhibition was organized by the Scientific Library of the Ivan
Franko National University of Lviv and the Department of the History of Philosophy
with the assistance of the Center for Marketing and Development and the Student
Trade Union of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. The initiator of the book
exhibition was Professor at the Department of the History of Philosophy Andrii
Synytsia within the framework of the research grant The Teodota and Ivan Klym
Grants in Ukrainian Studies 2024–2025, provided by the Canadian Institute of
Ukrainian Studies of the University of Alberta. The event was moderated by Doctor
of Philosophical Sciences Andrii Dakhnii. In the lecture-presentation «Graduates of
the Faculty of Philosophy of Lviv University» Prof. Andriy Synytsia told what
teaching was like at the Faculty of Philosophy of Lviv University at the beginning of
the 20th century, described the Lviv period of Stepan Balei’s life and work and the
features of Oleksandr Kulchytskyi’s creative path until his emigration from Lviv, and
also reported on the further fate of the outstanding graduates of our alma mater and
their path to recognition. After the speech, the audience viewed three book
exhibitions. The first of them is dedicated to Stepan Balei’s scientific works. Among
his presented books, it is worth highlighting «Über Urteilsgefühle» (Lviv, 1916),
«From the Psychology of Shevchenko’s Creativity» (Lviv, 1916), «Outline of
Psychology» (Lviv, 1922), «Outline of Logic» (Lviv, 1923), «Psychologja wieku
dojrzewania» (Lviv, Warsaw, 1931), «Osobowość» (Lviv, 1939), etc. The second
exhibition contained the scientific works of Oleksandr Kulchytskyi. In particular,
among them it is worth highlighting the studies «On the way to the great secret. (The
last stage of Maurice Maeterlinck’s work)» (Literaturno-naukovyi vistnyk, 1923),
«Typy egocentryczne. Charakterologia F. Künkla w swietle krytyki» (Lviv, 1938),
«Adler’s Psychology (Character, Upbringing, Family in the Light of Adler’s
Individual Psychology)» (Kolomyia, 1939), «Introduction to philosophical
anthropology» (Munich, 1973), «Fundamentals of philosophy and philosophical
sciences» (Munich – Lviv, 1995). The third book exhibition is devoted to scientific
works about Stepan Balei and Oleksandr Kulchytskyi. Among the exhibited studies,
in particular, the works of O. Honcharenko, V. Maletskyi, M. Podoliak, S. Ivanyk,
A. Synytsia, who confidently prove that today the study of Stepan Balei’s and
Oleksandr Kulchytskyi’s creative heritage of continues to be relevant and allows us to
rethink Ukrainian philosophico-scientific thought and analyse it in the context of the
development of the European intellectual tradition.
After getting acquainted with the book exhibition, the attendees took part in a
philosophical interactive and were able to learn a little more about Stepan Balei’s and

Oleksandr Kulchytskyi’s philosophical views. In conclusion, Prof. Andrii Synytsia
invited all attendees to attend an International Roundtable on Friday, February 7, in
the Mirror Hall of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, dedicated to honoring
Stepan Balei and Oleksandr Kulchytskyi.
The exhibition will run until February 12 with the possibility of extension.
