Course description

The academic course “Political Decision-Making and Public Policy” is an elective within the “Public Policy” track for students majoring in Political Science. It is taught during the 6th semester and carries 4 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). The course is designed to provide in-depth knowledge of the theory and practice of political decision-making. Special attention is given to the development of analytical skills and the ability to apply acquired knowledge to solving both theoretical and practical problems.

The aim of the course “Political Decision-Making and Public Policy” is to develop in future political science bachelors a systematic understanding of the historical and methodological foundations of political decision-making theories; the conceptual frameworks of key theoretical models of political decision-making; and their explanatory potential in analyzing decision-making processes in democratic, authoritarian, and transitional political regimes. The course also explores the main stages of the political decision-making process.

Based on this foundation, the course aims to equip future political scientists with the ability to:

  • identify the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of contemporary political decision-making theories;
  • determine the factors contributing to effective political decision-making in public policy;
  • apply theoretical knowledge in practice, particularly in analyzing the implementation of public policy in Ukraine.

In addition, the course is aimed at providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will enable them to effectively and appropriately apply what they have learned in their future professional activities.
